Practising mindfulness and fully embracing the present allowed me to embark on learning expeditions that empowered me with skills to sustain myself and serve others.

As I discovered during my psychology studies in 2007, mindfulness is about embracing the present moment and being open to whatever it brings. At that time, fear dominated my existence, and daily struggles seemed insurmountable.
Every morning, I would wake up in terror, bracing myself against abuse from those who were meant to protect me. These tormentors included the familiar voices I had grown accustomed to since childhood. During this dark period, a battered second-hand copy of Norman Vincent Peale's "The Power of Positive Thinking" introduced me to mindfulness. It taught me that I still had the power of choice regardless of my circumstances. I could choose how to live each moment, even if survival seemed uncertain.
Previously, I coped by immersing myself in challenges, refusing to dwell on my misery. I threw myself into academic pursuits and the arts, striving to avoid the pain that threatened to consume me. However, this relentless pursuit left me disconnected from inner peace. The silence that followed was daunting, as it forced me to confront a flood of overwhelming emotions—loneliness, despair, and hopelessness.
Realizing the Power of Choice:
This newfound understanding of choice inspired me to view every moment as an opportunity to grow and explore faith. Approaching each moment with child-like curiosity, I discovered the potential to educate myself further. This revelation came from a chapter on Booker T. Washington that I read as a primary school student. His teachings instilled in me the importance of education.
Embracing Mindfulness:
Practising mindfulness and fully embracing the present allowed me to embark on learning expeditions that empowered me with skills to sustain myself and serve others. As I entered the world of service, mindfulness enabled me to immerse myself in my work, disregarding the voices of dissent. This unwavering commitment reaffirmed my faith in my calling. Mindfulness became my anchor, helping me find strength within to fight against abuse and torture. It compelled me to approach each moment with fierce determination and unwavering discipline, focusing on possibilities in the face of adversity.
Overcoming Challenges:
Challenges manifested as threats to my survival throughout this journey, relentlessly battering me. There were days when my body refused to respond, leaving me unable to take action. But these moments have become reminders of my perseverance, even without hope. Guiding me through moments of faltering were the role models I admired—the ordinary men and women who achieved extraordinary feats in the harshest of circumstances.
Mindfulness in my Professional Life:
Today, as a mental health professional, embracing mindfulness allows me to maintain composure amidst conflict and create an environment conducive to healing. It has become more than just a choice; it is the only choice that enables me to navigate life's challenges with resilience and grace. I draw strength from the wisdom of experience, scientific insights, and fellow travellers' resounding support.
Mindfulness has helped me transcend past wounds, empowering me to create a brighter future. I witness its transformative potential in the lives of those I am privileged to serve. It aids them in overcoming adversity and embracing personal growth.
