Rebuilding My Sense of Self

A Therapist’s Personal Account

Tue Oct 28 2025|iDare Team

Thank you for the privilege of your time ♥♥♥

I’m here to speak...
 not as a therapist,
but as someone who’s been on a journey.

A journey of figuring out who I am.
 My sense of self.

What I believe.
 What I stand for.
 What I like, dislike.
What I carry as my strengths...
and what I’m still learning to hold with gentleness.

For the longest time,
 I didn’t know myself.

I only knew myself through the mirror others held up.
Through what they said about me.
 Through how they saw me.
Their judgments. Their labels. Their opinions.
 That became me.

That was all I had.

And every time someone asked me to go within...
 to reflect...
 to name who I am...
 I would freeze.
Because what rose up wasn’t clarity—
it was a tidal wave of pain.

And now I see.
 That pain was a cry.
A cry from parts of me that had never been seen.
Never been given space to be.

Abuse, cruelty, criticism...
They buried that sense of self.

Until one day, I couldn’t look away anymore.
 I had to know myself—
 Because survival depended on it.
 And so, I began.

Slowly.
 Quietly.
 Falteringly.

It started like gathering mosaic tiles.
 Pieces of Me.
 Some old. Some new.
 Some broken.
 Some beautiful.

And I placed them—one by one—into this becoming.

I began to see things in me I could love.
 Strengths I had silenced.
Values I now knew I wanted to hold close.

And I met my rigid beliefs.
 My inherited fears.
 Stories that no longer fit.

And most importantly—
I learned that I don’t find myself in isolation.

I find myself in connection.
 In the showing up.
 In the stumbling.
 In the loving.
 In the living.

And this process—this ever-changing, inherently unpredictable, beautiful process—
 It’s enough.

I am enough.
Wherever I am in this mosaic.

And so are you, my Pal.
 Exactly where you are.

Cheers, mate♥

Hoping we’ll cross paths sometime...

Take good care of yourself♥
