The news of rising layoffs only added to my panic.
The COVID-19 pandemic had thrown the world into uncertainty, and it was no different for me. I had just graduated from post-graduation, and the world looked daunting. The news of rising layoffs only added to my panic. I had worked hard to get to where I was, and the thought of not finding a job that suited my skills was overwhelming. Most places of my interest wanted people with many years of experience, adding to my panic as a fresher.
Desperate, I began applying for any job I could find. I was applying for jobs that didn’t mention work details or active contact details. I remember applying for a job at a reputed institute in India, qualifying, and making it to the last round. But after that, there were days of silence. The Institute ghosted me, and I had to live with my anxieties and endless questions –
“When will I hear from them?”
“Will I hear from them?”
“Was I selected?”
“How long should I wait to see other places?”
“What if they reach me later? I liked the position here.”
“Am I the problem?”
“Is my phone working?”
“Are my emails active?”
“Any issues with my network?”
The Institute's contact details were inactive. Ten days passed, and I thought of asking other people in my network if anybody had additional contact information for the reputed Institute. I got none. But what I got was a piece of priceless advice and a gentle reminder from a dear friend –
“Why do you want to work with an organization that’s making you run for a call? The one that’s right for you will call you; it won’t make you run for something as basic as an update. They will treat you right.”
Seeking help and talking to a trusted one reminded me how in my passion for getting a job, I forgot that my need for a job didn't mean I should settle for something less than what I deserved. I was ready to accept anything that came my way as long as it paid my bills.
I would have compromised my time, confidence, and respect if I had kept waiting to hear from the reputed Institute. Add to it the decline in my mental health. Instead,
- I applied mindfully to positions that looked promising for my career and
- Where the professionals made me feel respected.
- I looked for the right opportunities and did not let myself settle for less.
- This took time, but I didn’t waste any time by staying in places that made me wait without purpose.
Eventually, I landed a lovely job where I didn't have to run to know the details of my work. The interviewers made me feel warm and welcoming; the kindness and understanding were mutual. They appreciated my skills and encouraged me to grow.
For those reading my story,
- You will get what you hope for and more.
- Remember the power of kindness. When times are tough, the need for kindness increases. Use kind words when you talk to yourself and others.
- Encourage yourself to stay focused and motivated toward your goals.
- Be kind to yourself. All of us, at some time, feel overwhelmed and panicked. But see if you can take a step back and reassess your priorities. It helps.
You are not alone in your struggle for the right job.
