When the Struggle Becomes Too Hard to Face

When the pain becomes too much to bear,
And in the throes of despair, the future looks so dark and daunting
That the only option that seems to offer relief is to end it all.

World Suicide Prevention Day: A Wake-Up Call

On 10th September, World Suicide Prevention Day, we once again shed the spotlight on mental health. It’s a call to acknowledge the silent struggles of those who find it hard to keep going and to emphasize the importance of timely support and intervention.

As a therapist and mental health advocate, I hope to share insights that can help when faced with insurmountable feelings of hopelessness and despair.

Understanding Distress

Distress occurs when situations—both internal and external—trigger intense feelings and thoughts that spiral out of control. When challenges you’ve been struggling with progressively worsen, and your mind and body no longer respond even to the bare minimum.

You may feel like you’ve tried everything, but nothing works. Everything feels threatening, the future looks bleak, and the distress is so overpowering that functioning becomes nearly impossible. The absence of reliable support systems can only make this worse.

The Role of Mental Health

Our mind’s influence often remains unconscious until we can no longer ignore its presence. Mental health conditions, often portrayed as extreme cognitive or behavioral states, make us think we only need help in crisis situations.

Yet, stigma around seeking help, lack of awareness, and insufficient resources leave many feeling isolated during moments of despair. Recognizing mental health as a critical part of daily functioning and prioritizing care is an important step towards healing.

The Debilitating Nature of Mental Health Conditions

Conditions like depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias affect many of us but remain unfamiliar to a majority. Often, people mistake symptoms of these conditions for personality flaws or character defects, which only fuels feelings of failure and hopelessness.

Factors Contributing to Distress

  • Past abuse and trauma profoundly shape how we engage with life.

  • Life’s unreasonable demands can overwhelm us.

  • Feelings of guilt, shame, and self-doubt deepen our struggles.

Both internal and external factors can intensify distress, sometimes leading to crisis points.

A Message of Hope

There can be times when distress feels unbearable,
When hope seems completely shut down.

But, my friend, in those moments,
Know this: You have done enough.
It’s time to reach out for the support you’ve long needed.

There is a way out. There is a way through.
And there’s a future with your name written on it.

Together, we shall. Together, we can. Together, we must.
