When the Darkness Feels Endless
Looks like this time, darkness is here to stay…
Days and months have passed, and yet it feels like you're stuck in the same rut.
Fleeting moments of clarity—a semblance of clearing…
And then the dark clouds return again.
This describes the state that many of us who go through long periods of hopelessness and despair have to contend with—for days on end.
In this article, I hope to share insights that can help those of us struggling to stay afloat when the path feels overwhelmingly gloomy. These are insights that have, time and again, proven helpful in my therapeutic practice, offering a sense of direction toward the fulfilling life we all hold potential for.
Let’s get started.
The Gloom Trap
When everything around you feels like a threat, and the past continues to cast its dreadful shadows, it can become all too overwhelming.
Feelings surface with such force that it becomes difficult to go on. Add to this the never-ending loop of thoughts, and you’ve got the perfect storm that keeps the rut alive.
Here are a few pointers that can help:
-
Recognize when things are becoming unmanageable
-
Notice when your inner turmoil makes it impossible to shake off the stagnation
-
Remind yourself that help and support are available—and within reach
-
Know that regaining your desired level of functioning is possible, with sustained support
Facing the Impossible
Sometimes, the experiences we go through are so traumatic, they make it seem impossible to believe that there’s a way out.
But the more you connect with others—fellow travelers on this journey of being human—the more you realize you are not alone.
Whether you’re grappling with a haunting past, a difficult present, or an anxiety-filled future, these thoughts may help:
-
No matter the nature or depth of your pain, the right support can help you work through it
-
What you fear facing the most may carry the key to your liberation
-
Every small step forward counts—no matter how hesitant or slow
The Balancing Act That Works
Addressing distress is essential, yes—but thriving, not merely surviving, is the real goal.
That means looking forward, setting goals, and designing a future that aligns with what brings you meaning and satisfaction.
Reflect on the following:
-
What goals do you want to commit to as part of your journey?
-
What lifestyle changes have you longed to introduce that support your well-being?
-
Can you allow yourself to celebrate the journey—not just the outcomes?
-
Can your past struggles inspire deeper self-compassion?
Pitstops, Detours, and Destinations
Even with your best intentions, the journey to healing won’t always feel linear.
Sometimes it may feel like you’ve circled back, or like old patterns are returning to stay. Panic may creep in. You may question the value of the work you’re doing.
But here’s what might help:
-
Healing from trauma takes time, space, and patience
-
Detours are part of the process—not a failure of it
-
New patterns of thought and behavior will emerge as your awareness deepens and evolves
In Closing...
It always seems impossible in the beginning.
When emotions rise, thoughts feel relentless, and nothing seems to work in your favor.
Braveheart, I want you to know this:
As you take even one small step out of the darkness, reaching toward the sanctuary of trusted ones…
With help and support, you’ll soon begin to see:
What once seemed impossible can be managed.
And new possibilities—ones you never imagined—begin to unfold.
A future awaits you.
You got this.
Cheers, mate.
