The Weight Beneath My Skin

A Poem on Heartbreak, Healing, and the Silent Struggle

Maybe I’ll never go back to
Being the person I used to be,
A version of me that didn’t go through heartbreak or hardship,
A version that fights its way through the dark.

It’s okay to take time to be okay.
It’s okay to not heal.

I spoke fondly of passion and talents,
Now breathe confusion and fear.

Why do I feel this way?
What’s strange about this feeling?

I carpet my soul so well
No one notices the scar underneath.

I think too much,
Too deeply—
A deadly combination.

Like the moon, I have a dark side.
Even the stars don’t shine.
So cold, even the sun can’t burn.

Salty eyes tell stories,
Making my heart weep.

Can you wrap me in a blanket,
Say I am safe forever?

People aren’t born sad,
The world makes them that way.
