Understanding and Regulating Emotions: Navigating the Waves of Feelings

Our feelings and emotions add flavor to our lives. They help us make sense of our experiences and derive meaning from them. But sometimes, those same emotions can make life hard to manage. So much so that many of us resort to numbing or distracting ourselves from feeling them, often through undesirable means.

In this article, I’ll share insights proven effective through my years of therapeutic practice in helping those struggling with emotional regulation.

The Relevance of Emotions

Our emotions play an adaptive role in human functioning. They reveal what is personally meaningful to us. Through emotional reactions, we understand what matters, how we appraise the world, and how we cope with it.

However, many may be skeptical about engaging with emotions because:

  • Emotions can be overwhelming and feared as disruptive to daily functioning.

  • Experiencing emotions might make us aware of undesirable or daunting truths about ourselves and others.

  • Lack of knowledge on how to properly process certain emotions can cause avoidance.

The Process of Emotional Regulation: Ability and Skill

Emotional processing and regulation skills typically develop in childhood, especially in environments where emotions and needs are accepted and validated unconditionally.

We learn to hold emotions in awareness, derive meaning, and decide how to act based on them.

This process can be hindered by:

  • Non-ideal childhood environments leading to disengagement from emotions as a survival tactic.

  • Fear of consequences from expressing emotions, leading to numbing or expressing only socially acceptable feelings.

  • Rejecting emotions that reflect true feelings due to current circumstances, focusing only on selective emotions.

The Impact of Trauma

Trauma arises from experiences that exceed our coping abilities, negatively affecting emotional processing and regulation.

Helpful insights include:

  • Recognizing trauma’s presence and impact, validating concerns, and prioritizing intervention.

  • Unpacking past and present burdens can awaken dormant emotions.

  • Processing emotions in safe, non-judgmental spaces (like therapy) facilitates healing.

Steps Forward: Navigating Emotional Experiences with Care

Understanding the crucial role of emotions encourages us to approach them with care and sensitivity.

Those struggling with emotional regulation can develop skills with proper support.

Pointers to consider:

  • Identify situations that trigger difficult emotions.

  • Recognize the emotions you struggle with most.

  • Set goals for improving emotional processing and regulation.

Closing Reflection

Emotions… as the waves peak,

It can be terrifying enough to make you wonder,
If only I could live a life devoid of them…

Know that every emotion arrives to bring awareness
To something you need to attend to.

The key is not to control or numb them,
But to understand their meaning and manage them,
Leading you closer to your true self,
As you take steps forward.
