Indian Women Shining Bright at the Paris Paralympics 2024
The Paris Paralympics 2024 marked a historic moment for Indian sports, with our athletes not just participating but excelling on the global stage. Among these remarkable performers were Indian women who broke barriers and set new standards of excellence, bringing home several medals. Their journeys are not just about winning but also about the relentless pursuit of excellence and the spirit of resilience that defines true champions.

The Stories of Courage and Triumph
Preethi Pal, a name that might have been lesser known before the games, became a beacon of inspiration for many. She etched her name in history by becoming the first Indian woman track and field athlete to win two bronze medals at a single Paralympics. Competing in the Women’s 100m T35 and 200m T35 events, her achievements are a testament to her determination and hard work. For Preethi, the journey to the podium wasn’t just about physical strength but also about overcoming the mental barriers that come with being an underdog in the world of sports.

Sheetal Devi also made headlines as she continued her impressive run in para-archery. At just 17 years old, she became the youngest Indian Paralympic medalist by securing a bronze in the Mixed Team Compound Open category alongside Rakesh Kumar. Her story is particularly inspiring because, despite being a gold medal favourite, she faced tough competition and still managed to secure a podium finish. Sheetal’s journey reflects the spirit of the Paralympics, where every shot counts and every moment is a chance to shine.

Another star who dazzled at the Paris Paralympics was Deepthi Jeevanji. She made history by becoming the first Indian athlete with intellectual impairment to win a Paralympic medal, claiming bronze in the Women’s 400m T20 event. Deepthi’s success is a powerful reminder that with the right support and opportunities, athletes with intellectual disabilities can achieve greatness on the world stage. Her triumph is not just a personal victory but a significant milestone for inclusive sports in India.

In the badminton court, Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass created history in the Women’s Singles SU5 category. Thulasimathi won silver, becoming the first Indian woman to reach the final in Paralympic badminton, while 19-year-old Manisha secured a bronze, marking her as the first Indian woman to medal in the sport at the Paralympics. Their achievements highlight the rising prominence of Indian women in badminton, a sport traditionally dominated by other nations.

Simran Sharma also brought glory to the nation by winning a bronze medal in the Women’s 200m T12 category. Her performance was a personal best, making her the first-ever Indian woman to medal in this category. Simran’s story is one of relentless hard work and the pursuit of excellence, embodying the spirit of the Paralympic Games.

The successes of Indian women at the Paris Paralympics 2024 go beyond the medals they won. These athletes have shattered stereotypes and paved the way for future generations of women in sports. Their achievements are a source of national pride and a reminder that anything is possible with determination, perseverance, and the right support.

The Bottomline
As we celebrate these incredible women, we must also recognise the importance of continued investment in sports infrastructure, coaching, and support systems that enable more women to pursue their dreams.

The Paris Paralympics is the beginning of a new era where Indian women in sports, especially those with disabilities, can dream big and achieve the extraordinary. Their stories inspire us to challenge our limits and believe in the power of resilience and hard work.

India’s medal tally at the Paris Paralympics is a testament to the country’s growing prowess in para-sports, and the achievements of these women are a significant part of this success. Their stories will continue to inspire countless others to take up sports and strive for excellence, making India proud on the global stage
