Mirror, Mirror on the Wall… Am I the Best of All?

As we journey through life — in roles like a mother, teacher, partner, or simply a “liver of life,” as Orry might say — we often lose sight of our beautifully unique, idiosyncratic selves. We get caught up in measuring our worth through the lens of outcomes: the success of a project, a compliment from a colleague, or even the silence of a friend. And in those moments, we can be unkind — not just to ourselves, but to others, all based on the meanings we assign to these experiences.

But in order to be truly present in any relationship — romantic, platonic, familial, or professional — we must first understand who we are when we are alone. This self-awareness isn’t about achieving perfection; it’s about recognizing the rhythms of our inner world.

Why do silences feel awkward to us?
Why does advance planning soothe us, even if others find it unnecessary?
Why do we seek out connection despite knowing how vastly different we are from one another?

Because at the end of the day, we’re all social beings — wired for belonging.

This Week’s Theme: Being the Best

So, what does it truly mean to be “the best”? And who decides that, anyway?

Here are a few questions to guide your journaling and reflection this week:

  • What do you desire to be best at — and why?

  • Why is being “on top” important to you — and in what ways is it not?

  • How do you feel about honing a skill purely for mastery, not for comparison?

  • What skill, trait, or quality are you already known for — something others come to you for?

  • When you look in the mirror, what version of “the best” are you truly searching for?

Let Your Questions Lead the Way

These prompts are not here to box you in, but to help you unpack your truths. They are invitations to explore your motivations, your inner narratives, and those gifts of yours that may have once been dismissed as “too much” — when in fact, they may be exactly what the world needs.
