Mental Health: The Silent Force Shaping Our Lives

Mental health – an often invisible yet foundational part of our daily existence as human beings.

The 2023 World Mental Health Day theme, “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right,” brings long-overdue attention to this vital aspect of life that many of us may unknowingly neglect while caught in the daily grind.

As a mental health expert, I invite you to explore what lies at the heart of this powerful dimension — one that influences how we think, feel, act, relate, and ultimately, how we shape the world around us.

What Mental Health Truly Encompasses

Thoughts that rush through the highways of our mind.
Beliefs that quietly color our perceptions of self and others.
Emotions that shape the climate of our inner world.
Motivations, desires, drives, dreams — all residing in this rich inner landscape.

Mental health is not simply about diagnoses or disorders. It’s about the quality of our inner life — the way we interpret experiences, make choices, and respond to the world. Though often unseen, mental health deeply influences our relationships, work, goals, and overall wellbeing.

Mental Health: The Often-Ignored Pillar of Overall Health

As we strive for growth and success — personally, professionally, and socially — it becomes essential to return our focus to this quiet yet crucial pillar of health. It’s easy to set it aside when more “urgent” matters arise, but neglecting it can have deep and lasting effects.

Thankfully, global and national initiatives are working toward greater awareness and accessibility. But real, lasting change also depends on what each of us chooses to do — every day.

What Daily Mental Health Practices Can Look Like

  • Integrating mental health care into general health care

  • Being mindful of everyday practices that boost wellbeing — such as movement, sleep, nutrition, and connection

  • Recognizing health as more than just the absence of illness — it's about thriving and realizing one’s potential

  • Addressing concerns that limit or prevent engagement with life in all its fullness

Why It’s Still So Hard to Seek Help

The road to mental wellness isn’t always smooth.

  • Stigma continues to surround those who seek help

  • Reliable, affordable resources can be hard to find

  • High costs often keep professional support out of reach for many

Despite this, efforts by individuals and organizations are paving the way for change — offering time-tested resources, platforms, and support systems dedicated to making help more inclusive and accessible.

A Clarion Call for Change: World Mental Health Day, October 10

As World Mental Health Day approaches once again, we must ask ourselves:
Can we, as a nation, finally answer the call to recognize this vital component of health?

According to the World Health Organization, mental health is a basic, inalienable human right. Yet it continues to be undervalued — socially, structurally, and economically.

Where the Change Must Begin

It starts with us. In our homes. Schools. Workplaces. Communities.

Let’s bring change in:

  • The way we perceive those seeking mental health help

  • The way we speak about people dealing with emotional pain or trauma

  • The way we label conditions, often insensitively or inaccurately

  • The way we allocate resources and attention — so mental health is no longer an afterthought

Investing in the Most Vital Resource: Our Minds

With increasing levels of stress and rising expectations for what it means to live a meaningful life, we must collectively revamp our efforts. We need to invest in the one resource that sustains it all — our mental health.

Together, We Can. Together, We Must.

Let’s make space — socially, emotionally, and structurally — for mental health in our lives and communities.
