Let’s Explore: Purpose

As we traverse through life—in the roles of a mother, teacher, partner, or simply a “liver” (as Orry would say)—we may find ourselves hesitating to embrace our unique, idiosyncratic roots. What does that mean? It means that while moving through different phases of life, we often become absorbed in the meanings we attach to outcomes: successes, failures, praise, and even silence.

In those moments, we may become overly critical of ourselves—or others—for the interpretations we make.

Being With Others Starts With Being With Ourselves

To be with someone in any capacity—friend, colleague, partner, or family—it’s essential to know how we are when we are alone. Self-awareness isn’t self-absorption; it’s about understanding your emotional triggers, needs, and patterns.

That might look like:

  • Recognizing why silence can feel ‘awkward’ and provoke anxiety

  • Acknowledging that planning in advance soothes you, even if others find it stressful

  • Accepting that you thrive in community because, at your core, you're a social being

This kind of self-reflection isn’t indulgent—it’s necessary for healthier connections.

This Week, Let’s Explore: PURPOSE

Purpose isn’t always about grand missions or lifelong goals. Sometimes, it starts with knowing what truly matters to you, and how different aspects of life serve different internal needs.

Reflect on the following:

  • What are the top 3 values in my life that I want to always cherish and work on?

  • Materially-driven goals serve what kind of purpose in me?

  • Socially-driven commitments serve what kind of purpose in me?

  • Self-interested beliefs serve what kind of purpose in me?

  • How do my views about the current environment and the desire for change reflect a deeper sense of purpose?

The goal isn’t to have all the answers—it’s to start asking the right questions.

You Are Not “Too Much”

These weekly articles are designed to help you explore your emotional landscape—your motivations, philosophies, and gifts. Often, what the world dismisses as being "too much" is actually your deepest strength. What makes you different may be exactly what the world needs right now.
