Explaining Myself Everything Changed

Fri Aug 07 2026|Columnist: iDare Team

There is a specific kind of exhaustion that doesn’t come from physical work. It comes from the anguished, internal work of building a case for your own presence or absence.

We call it over-explaining.

Most of us do it every day. We don’t just say ‘no’ to a request or invitation; we provide a three-paragraph justification to prove we have the ‘right’ to decline.

The Raw Truth: If someone requires a ‘good enough’ reason to respect your boundaries, they don’t respect you. They respect your excuses. When you stop explaining, you stop giving people the tools to negotiate your needs.

The Weight of the ‘Because’

When you lead with ‘Because’ you are usually asking for permission.

  • I can’t come because….’ (Translation: Please don’t be mad at me).
  • I feel sad because….’ (Translation: Please tell me if my feelings are valid).

When we lack Self-Trust, we treat our emotions like defendants in a courtroom. We feel we must present ‘Option A, B, and C’ to prove our sadness is justified or our choices are fair.

Three Things to Know (the Coaching View)

  1. Stop Wasting Energy: Every minute you spend ‘building a case’ for your choices is energy stolen from your own happiness. We call this Decision Fatigue. Save your brain for things that actually matter.
  1. Silence is a Tool: You don’t need to fill the air with words to be ‘nice.’ Silence reinforces your boundaries. It shows you are grounded and confident.
  1. Ownership vs. People Pleasing: Over-explaining is often a habit called Fawning. It’s when we try to manage other people’s moods to feel safe. Coaching helps you move from managing them to owning them.

The ‘Soft Response’ Cheat Sheet

Instead of. (The Performance)

Try (The Soft Truth)

‘I can’t make it because my car is acting up and I’m so busy….’

‘I can’t make it this time, but thanks for the invite.’

‘I’m buying this because it was on sale and I really needed it….’

‘I bought this because I liked it’

‘I’m leaving early because I have a long day tomorrow….’

‘I’m heading out now. Have a great night!’

The Freedom of Being Unapologetic

The day you stop explaining, life experiences beautiful softness. You stop being a lawyer for your soul and start being a caretaker. You find a quiet, steady posture. You aren’t waiting for a verdict anymore because you’ve already decided to invest in Self-Trust.

Reclaim your breath. Stop defending your life and start living it.

‘Your soul is not a project to be finished or a problem to be solved.’

Ready to find your ‘Softness’?

Learning to stop over-explaining is a practise, not a switch. If you’re tired of living on the defensive and ready to reclaim your emotional energy, we’re here to help.

Let’s work on building the self-trust you need to live life on your own terms.
